"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" In Memory of Sgt Kenneth Conde and Cpl. Marc Ryan Semper Fi, Brothers Sgt. Kenneth Conde Jr. Sgt. Conde was killed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, 01 July 2004. Sgt.Conde was born on his mother's birthday, 23 June 1981, in New York City. A son of a marine, he traveled to many Marine Corps bases until finally settling in Orlando, FL, where he attended Stonewall Jackson Middle School and on 21 May 1999, his father's birthday, he graduated from Colonial High School. He was on the Delayed Entry Program throughout his senior year. On 25 May 1999, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his training in 2000, He was selected to be part of the Elite Marine Corps Anti-Terrorist Team. On 9/11 his team was activated and within hours was at the devastating site of The Twin Towers in New York City, where they performed various duties. During his enlistment he traveled the world and participated in many missions. On 02 February 2004, his unit was ordered to Iraq to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a Platoon Sgt. for 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, Sgt Conde went on over 200 combat missions. One of the missions was on 06 April 2004, while trying to get wounded marines out of harms way, Sgt. Conde was shot through his left shoulder. After being shot, he refused to be medically evacuated, Caring little about his own wound, he continued to lead his platoon forward for the next 48 hours. Only after he could not raise his wounded arm, did he stand down. Sgt. Conde could have come home but requested to stay in Iraq with his fellow marines. After minimal recovery from his wound, he continued to lead his marines on more combat missions until 01 July 2004, when his unarmored humvee was hit by an IED and he was killed. Sgt. Conde received two Purple Hearts and the Navy Achievement Medal while in Iraq. Sgt. Conde was also awarded the Bronze Star with a V for Heroism for his actions on 06-08 April 2004. Sgt. When Marc Ryan volunteered to return to Iraq for a third combat tour, his family tried to talk him out of it, but to no avail. "He said, `My brothers are dying out there, I've got to do something,'" said his brother, Chris. Ryan, 25, of Gloucester, N.J., was killed Nov. 15 in fighting in Ramadi, Iraq. He was based at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Ryan was a star athlete in high school, a linebacker and captain of the football team. He joined the Marines after two years at Wesley College in Dover, Del., where he majored in education. He planned to become a police officer. He was a third generation Marine and enlisted to carry on the family tradition, his brother said. He was remembered as a leader who was looked up to wherever he went.
